Combine panoramic views and traditional Cretan villages in one of the most famous areas of Western Crete, “Apokoronas” in a small group of 6-8 people in each vehicle. Learn about the history and the traditions of the island by visiting the villages, speak and hang out with locals and taste local dishes, all accompanied by the Cretan hospitality that characterises us. 

Our day begins with a stop in the village of Vrysses close to the river side and under plane trees. We continue our route around the traditional villages of Nipos and Tzitzifes and Fres for a coffee break. Following we will visit the temple of Virgin Mary (Panagia) of Two Rocks. Once a rock detached from the mountain and rolled down the slope. On the top of the rock, the church of Panagia was built. Adjacent there, is another rock, both forming an impressive scenery.

Our amazing off-road adventure begins after climbing up the White Mountains and passing through villages of Pemonia and Melidoni which are situated at the foothill of White Mountains. On the way up to the shepherd’s hut called “Mitato” you will enjoy the magnificent panoramic view of Northern Crete and if we are lucky, eagles might appear and wild goats could stop for us to take some photos. Escape to the Marathon Lake, Domaine Costas Lazaridis for a unique winery tour with tasting and lunch to a local tavern on a semi private premium seven hours tour.

Our day starts after we pick you up from your hotel or a point close to the indicated hotel if car access is not possible. We will follow the national road to North Suburbs of Athens, and at Agios Stefanos area our adventure route starts. Our day starts from Rethymnon city heading south east through coast line road until Melidoni Village and Apithano Honey factory where we make our first stop for a guided tour in the factoiry and tast some honey. After our morning stop and driving through the traditional villages of Milopotamos (Melidoni, Apladiana, Doxaro, Agridia,Tsaxiana) and areas with dense vegetation, fresh aromas and unique views. The amazing route and views continue until we reach the historic Halepa Monastery, that used to be a refuge for Cretan rebels during civil wars where we make our second stop. The unique view from the monastery will inspire you to take pictures, combining the highest mountain tops of Crete with the beautiful valley.

Afterwards our amazing off-road route continues and on the way up to the shepherd’s hut called “Mitato” the panoramic views will take your breath away. If we are lucky, we will get to marvel up close some wild eagles and goats and take some photos. The road will lead us up to a traditional Shepherd’s hut where you will find out all about the lifestyle of a shepherd and the cheese making process. 

Leaving the shepherd’s hut and already working up our appetite we will soon arrive at a traditional Cretan tavern in Axos village, where we are going to introduce you to Cretan cuisine and heartfelt hospitality with plenty of local platters. Enough time will be provided after lunch for those who wish to enjoy a cup of coffee. On our way back we will follow an asphalt road that will lead us to the city of Rethymnon.

Escape to Parnitha’s National Park on a semiprivate safari tour for up to 6 persons per vehicle. Mount Parnitha is a densely forested mountain range 40 km north of Athens. Parnitha’s national park is full of pine and fir forests. Our first stop will take place at an altitude of 600m, at Lake Beletsi which is an artificial lake that seems to belong in a fairytale. Our day starts from Chania moving south to reach the big orange valley. In a few minutes we will be inside the valley moving southwest through orange trees and farming areas, full of aromas and tastes. Crossing the valley we will encounter the villages of Varipetros, Agia, Alikianos, Fournes and start climbing on altitude through an offroad route, with dense vegetation and the best panoramic view of Chania, we reach Lakoi village for our coffee break.

Reaching an altitude of 1000m our adrenaline will raise while we continue our off-road route through the heart of the White Mountains, crossing the unknown shepherd's paths, filling ourselves with the fresh air and magical scenery of the wild vegetation, livestock and breathtaking landscapes. Athens day escape on a spectacular mountain route visiting two lakes and lush landscape. Forests with wild cypress, fir and black pine trees, lakes, rivers, plateaus, chapels and Monasteries compose an incredibly serene setting, focusing on the Ziria Mountains and Feneos River.

- Our vehicles are filled up according to governmental covid-19 law of their capacity. Those governmental laws and regulations against covid-19 infections might change, but are strictly followed at all times.
- The body temperature and wellness of all those participating in the tour (escort, driver, staff and guests) will be monitored daily, excluding and maintaining in quarantine any who display fever or other symptoms.

## ITINERARY

### A small beautiful village

We will start our tour by visiting a beautiful well-hidden village, Margarites. The tradition of pottery has been an integral part of this village for many generations; there are lots of locals who still keep the tradition alive, up to this day, by transforming the traditional practice of pottery into modern art. In Margarites, we will meet our friend Yorgos, a local, who will show you how the pots are hand thrown. A demonstration of his art will follow, that will certainly stay “carved” in our memory. The village itself has a unique architecture and some lovely narrow winding streets, making it worth being explored. So, let’s wander through the quiet village of Margarites, enjoy the hundreds of colors that lie before our eyes and then enjoy a traditional coffee at a small “kafeneio”.

### Feel the sanctity of Arkadi

After a 25' drive, we will continue to the religious and historical part of our tour. The goal is to become familiar with the Cretan culture and its religious customs. The Arkadi monastery is perhaps the best known monastery in Crete, due to its history of the Holocaust in 1866. However, its location and impressive architecture make it all more special. For everyone who visits the Arkadi monastery, the feeling is unique; serene and quiet, but also emotionally powerful. Dedicated to Saint Constantine, the church of the monastery is just exceptional. The monastery in general is full of flowers, so many that it is impossible to list them all, but the rose garden especially is extraordinary. Let’s not skip the museum chambers as well; there, we will find many photographs of historically important people, such as Hadjimichalis Giannaris, who during the revolution helped to ignite the patriotism and the anger of the Cretans. We will escort you to explore this magnificent monument, discuss about the history and less-known stories, but, since our guides are not official state guides, it is forbidden for them to give tours inside historical monuments. If you wish to have an official history guide, we will be happy to book one for you upon communication!


### Let’s explore the nature of Crete

Next up, is the gorge of Patsos. A small yet magnificent gorge, which begins at Ano Assites, is the necessary part to complete this excursion. The whole area around the gorge is of particular natural beauty. In the gorge, we can see rare species of flora and fauna, which are protected by the European legislation. As we walk onto the beautiful path, we will meet the attraction of the cavernous church of St. Anthony inside the rocky walls, which used to be a former temple of Hermes. If we want, we can stop at this point or even sooner, and head back for our return. If not, continuing from there, we will follow the trail to the ‘Potamon” dam. On the sides of the gorge there is an observation deck for birds in the area as well. During the biggest part of our hike, there is enough shadow and water to keep us cool; also, the feeling of walking under so many trees and next to running waters is unique! Usually, to complete the route, we will hike for about 3 1/2 hours, but depending on the weather and the physical condition of the travelers, we could hike more or less. It’s really up to you to choose how much walking we will do! It is also up to you to pick your favorite place to have a pic-nic with the best Cretan snacks and some wine or raki.When we decide to return, we follow the same path and end up at the starting point of the gorge.
