## ITINERARY

### Walk in Maroulas

The possibilities for walking and discovering outside of Rethymnon are numerous and at the same time so close! For this hike accompanied by a English-speaking guide, a short trip of 20-30 minutes outside Rethymnon is sufficient to reach the surroundings of the village of Maroulas and find yourself in the middle of nature. The village itself is well known for its ancient Venetian houses (a number of them have been renovated by lovers of old stones!) Indeed, the Italian bourgeoisie often had secondary houses built on the heights of Rethymno; important trade point during the Venetian occupation. Note that it is possible for us, before or after the hike, to discover the village if you feel like it. 

The hike itself begins after passing the village when we find ourselves surrounded by nature, far from the crowded places and with breathtaking views of the region; Rethymnon Bay to the north, the White Mountains to the west or Psiloritis to the south. We take the shepherds' paths but also part of the E4, the European hiking trail. During this loop of approximately 11 km, we cross several valleys which will sometimes allow us to have very clear views in height, sometimes to find ourselves in the middle of wild vegetation or vines. From experience, the only crossed living beings are either sheep or goats, or their shepherds because we are on their working land! And who knows? With a little luck, we might be invited by one of them returning from work, to drink a raki or to taste fresh cheese of the day with him ?! One of the magic of hiking and hospitality in Crete ...

If you are looking for tranquility, a change of scenery but also the discovery of the interior of Crete, this is a day for you! Note that the last part of the hike allows us to discover part of the sumptuous valley of Amari, a wild and uncrowded land which was many times the refuge of the Cretan resistance during the tormented history of the island...

At the end of the day, we will find the village of Maroulas and our vehicle.

The highest mountain in Greece and the residence of the twelve gods of mythology, invites you to a divine mountaineering experience. Here you will come with a unique mission: to sit on the “throne of Zeus”, having all of Greece at your feet !! and to conquer the peak.

Olympos, extending to the prefectures of Pieria and Larissa, southwest of Macedonia, proudly stands up like a giant tower of 2918 meters without anybody questioning its sovereignty. Because of this fact, the Ancient Greeks had “placed” their gods on him.

**Mytikas: at the top of Greece**

Higher than the 2,918 meters only the birds fly. These and the immense blue of the sky will be seen on the highest peak of Olympus, Mytikas. With only a few meters away, Skolio, Stephani, Skala and Prophet Elias stand up to form a compact mountain mass that you should see through the clouds, shining and imposing. Besides, one of the interpretations of the word Olympos from the Homeric years is “shining”.

## 📅 Itinerary

### Day 1

Meeting and welcome in the central parking of Litochoro. Activity information and preparation, departure by car for the place Gorzia.

Hiking from Gortsia to the Plateau of the Muses. Accommodation at the mountain refuge Kakkalos or Apostolidis (subject to availability). Duration 5-7 hours (depending on the capabilities of the team).

Short stop for rest in the middle of the route at the mountain refuge of Petrostrouga.

### **Day 2**

Hiking from the mountain shelter to the top of Mytika 2918 meters, lasting 1.5 hours, there we will sign the book of climbers and we will rest for our return.

Return to the position “Gortsia” lasting 5-7 hours (depending on the capabilities of the team).
Short stop for rest in the middle of the route at the mountain refuge of Petrostrouga.

## ITINERARY

### Preveli and the palm beach walk

Our guide/driver will pick you up from your hotel at around 8:30. After a 40 minutes drive towards the hinterland, we will reach the area of the famous Preveli Monastery and the equally (or more) famous Palm-tree beach of Preveli nearby.

This walk aims to make you discover one part of the south coast of Crete (about 30km south from Rethymno), hike through fantastic natural and preserved landscapes, surrounded by hills, olive groves and mountains, but also to swim in the pristine waters of the Libyan Sea.

The hike can be divided in three parts;

The first one will take us to the Palm Beach and its river coming from the mountaineous heart of Crete. It will take us about 1h30-2h to reach it, whereas we walk through fields and close to the walls of the gorge that we can sometimes see down below. The arrival on the south coast that many people would call "the other Crete" or "the real Crete" is always magical! Blooming thyme scents, amazing scenery views and a sense of freedom are guaranteed!

The second part is a bit more relaxing as it includes a "mandatory" swim in the clear and blue Libyan Sea! There, we also have the possibility to walk along the river of Preveli, along its banks surrounded by palm trees. Of course, natural pools of sweet water are available to be enjoyed!

For this last part, we leave the Preveli beach for another 1hour walk to finish our loop, through pastures, using the shepherds' tracks for some more adventures!

We eventually reach our vehicle and then drive to a nearby taverna for a (late?) and well-deserved lunch.

Palm Forest Hike in Preveli from Rethymno

**A full day hiking trip on the '' Menalon Trail '' from Stemnitsa to Dimitsana.**

Menalon Trail, located in Arcadia of central Peloponnese is the first certified trail in Greece by the European Ramblers Association (ERA). The area is not just mountainous but it is also characterized by a rugged relief composed of continuous valleys, deep gorges, big plateaus and bare peaks. Part of Menalon trail is the famous and very popular hike from Stemnitsa to Dimitsana comprising some of the best features of the area.

Our trip starts from Stemnitsa the village of goldsmiths to Dimitsana the village of watermills. These are two of the most important settlements in the Peloponnese and two of the most picturesque of Greece. Both excellent examples of traditional stone architecture, dominant in every public building, dwellings and churches and in the village cobble paths. We walk into a versatile environment encountering the Byzantine Monasteries of Prodromos and Philosophos dating to 963 A.D. literally hanging off the cliffs. We discover old hermitages, watermills and water springs while crossing the imposing gorge of Lousios the river where mythical god Zeus had his first bath. We end our journey at the Open-Air Water Power Museum in Dimitsana, a place highlighting the importance of water power in traditional society.

Hiking Menalon

**A half day crossing at the gorge of the female river of Neda**

Neda is a river of the western Peloponnese. Stems from mount Lykaion, flows westward and empties into the Ionian Sea. The river was named after the nymph Neda who was a goddess of the waters. Near the banks of the river is the ancient town of Phiigalia and the temple of Epicureus Apollo. The river over a large part of it crosses a ravine with very rich vegetation. Along its course, numerous waterfalls are created. The largest is near Figalleia and has a height of about 25 meters. Neda is a well-kept secret river of Greece, still a hidden gem! A perfect choice for river trekking.

Our river trek starts at the Figalia bridge near the village Platania where you meet your guide. After a briefing we start our trek. Though there is not a real track we aim to walk through or along the river. We may have to hop on rocks, jump on the river bank, figure out for the best way. Walking in the water is unavoidable, while in other parts swimming is absolutely necessary. Along the river course there is rich vegetation with plane trees. Waterfalls appear suddenly in front of our eyes and in parts the river narrows and is surrounded by steep rocks. After 4 hours of walking & swimming, we reach the main majestic waterfall of 25 m creating a large pond with crystal clear turquoise waters. We shall swim in the pediment of the great waterfall and the more daring will descend by a rope until the opening of the Stomion cave. Before ending our trek, we shall make a relaxing stop to taste a homemade picnic of fresh local delicacies.

River Trekking Neda

**A canyoning trip at Neda Waterfalls Gorge ideal for first timers**

Neda gorge is a hidden gem of southern Peloponnese. According to Greek mythology, Neda was a nymph, a goddess of water and she was one of those who nourished Zeus. Waterfalls are created along the gorge course with incredible waters, maybe the cleanest in Greece. The lush environment, the crystal-clear waters, and the majestic cliffs make the crossing of this gorge an unforgettable experience. Our canyoning trip here is the ideal way to do your first steps and get addicted to the magic world of canyoning. No previous experience is required, families with teenage kids are welcomed.

Meet your guide at the starting point. He will welcome you and brief you all you need to know about how to descend the gorge safely and how to achieve maximum fun out of it. Your guide will also provide you with wetsuits, helmets, and harnesses and you are ready to go. In a few minutes, the game begins with your first slide into one of the ponds of the gorge. After that, there is swimming, walking, water jumping, and a lot of fun as we move further. Quite often we abseil down the beautiful waterfalls under the directions of our guides. Last but not least rappel will be at the greatest and most notable waterfall of the river. Here, is the only accessible spot by other visitors and where most of them come to swim. Canyoning Neda Waterfalls

We start at Panorama with the starting and finishing point in Platanakia Natura, 5 km long route (90% path, 10% forest road), lasting 2-3 hours (with 30” breaks included). 

The total ascent is 140 meters, with a minimum altitude of 265 meters and a maximum altitude of 393 meters. 

The degree of difficulty is easy to moderate.

Run and hike in Thessaloniki - Platanakia Trail

**A half day hike at the longest gorge of mount Taygetos**

Just 10km away from Kalamata, yet so close to the core of Taygetos massif lies Ridomo gorge. A geological phenomenon with interesting limestone formations, created by the effect of water rushing down from the mountains. The gorge starts from the peaks of mount Taygetos all the way down to the beach of Santova just outside of Kalamata. At a certain point it becomes two meters narrow and 60 meters high. Walking through this part is a great experience.

Our hike starts from the rim near the village Vorio. We follow the path leading down to the rocky bottom. Walking the gorge uphill is a bit challenging as we scramble the huge boulders but very much rewarding as the views around us are truly magnificent. We make a few stops to rest enjoy a healthy picnic and admire the unique geological formations. We may spot some wild goats skillfully balancing on the almost vertical cliffs. Small waterfalls dripping down from high above, and partly those walls are decorated by evergreen ivy plants. After around 5 kilometers the rockiest part is over and the gorge gets narrower. Soon we shall find yourselves into a narrow corridor between vertical walls, listening the echo of our steps and almost able to touch both walls at the same time. This is the most impressive part of Ridomo Gorge.

## ITINERARY

### Canyoning in Seitan Limani

Seitan Limani is one of the most dreamy and famous beaches of the north Cretan coast. Get ready to discover a totally different and adventurous way to reach it! 

We park our vehicles two minutes away from the entrance of the canyon. There, with a beautiful sea view, we will have a detailed briefing so that everybody feels comfortable with the use of the canyoning gear. 

Then, we walk to the entrance of the canyon and we start our unique experience together! Sometimes walking through steep walls full of amazing rock formations and various plants, sometimes abseiling down one of the six different rappels of the canyon, we enjoy this adventure and we bond as a team, taking pictures and sharing beautiful moments.

After approximatelly 2-3 hours, we will arrive at the amazing Seitan Limani beach, still wearing our canyoning gear and helmets, as the exit of the canyon is litterally on it's white sand! This is surelly a moment to remember...

Of course we will have some free time to enjoy the crystal clear waters and have a snack, before we head back to your hotels full of exciting memories.

Canyoning in Seitan Limani

**A full day hiking adventure at the highest peak of mount Taygetos at 2407m**

Mount Taygetos is the highest mountain in the Peloponnese boasting a height of 2407 meters. Beautiful forests covering the sub-alpine area, gorges and ravines shaded by plane trees are features of an incredible landscape. Walking the trails of Taygetos, a hiker can witness the geological history of 200 million years. The highest peak of 2407m, a solid limestone forms an almost perfect pyramid considered a sacred place from ancient times. Hiking the highest peak was an important achievement for the ancient Spartans and still is today.

Our hike to the highest peak of 'Prophet Elias' starts from the refuge of the Sparta mountaineering club at 1550m. Reaching the alpine meadows the smell of the fragrant shrubs and wildflowers dominate our senses where the most important the endemic herbal tea is dominant. On our way we stop to enjoy the spectacular vistas the mountain generously offers. We continue uphill to the so-called ''Portes'' meaning gates, a split of the ridge that marks our entry into the final part of our hike to the summit. Soon we will be walking the so-called ''immortal ridge''. A few more steps and we touch the summit plateau ''conquering'' the highest peak of the mountain at 2407m. The view from the top is breathtaking to all corners of the horizon. After tasting a delicious picnic that will get our batteries charged, we take the way back.

Hiking mount Taygetos summit at 2407m

**A half day downhill hike in Biliovo Trail**

Biliovo is considered as one of the most well-preserved traditional cobblestone paths of Greece, unique in its kind, it is classified as a folk architectural monument. It was created by local artisans in the early 20th century in an effort lasted 25 years! It has been a vital boost for the local social and economic growth since it linked the higher with the lower villages of western Mani.

Our hike starts from the village of Altomira on the outskirts of the southwestern Taygetos. While descending on its curly way of 75 turns, images from the past unfold when locals were passing through the path carrying water and goods from their fields to their houses with the help of patient mules. The natural environment around in and the elevation since in some parts the cobble path has been built on 70% slope, offer awesome views. While walking through the old path our gaze extends to all over Messinia lapped by the blue Mediterranean. From the villages of Mani and the city of Kalamata to Koroni and Cape Akritas. Midway we stop to rest and taste a homemade picnic of local delicacies and fresh fruits enjoying stunning views.

Hiking Biliovo trail

The meeting point, start, and finish of the tour takes place at Arsakeio School at the Eleones of Pylaia. The first 1200 meters of the tour is a circular route of 9.5 km (60% path, 40% forest road). The duration of the tour is 3 - 4 hours (30” breaks included), the total ascent is 340 meters with a minimum altitude of 180 meters and a maximum altitude 500 meters. 

The degree of difficulty is difficult.

Run and hike in Thessaloniki - Arsakio Trail

**Cycling around Gialova Lagoon**

Gialova lagoon in south Peloponnese is one of the most important wetlands and the southernmost one not only in Greece but Europe hosting numerous species of endemic and migratory birds. Within short distance from Pylos and the legendary Nestor Palace, the lagoon is also near the famous omega shape beach of Voidokilia. A unique place due to its evergreen charm and ecosystem the area attracts naturalists and outdoor enthusiasts from all over the world.

Our cycling trip starts from the town of Gialova. We cycle partly on flat local gravel and asphalt roads, among significantly old olive tree farms, descending all the way to the coastline, reaching the spectacular site of the Gialova Lagoon. We traverse the lagoon home to 270 bird species in Greece through a narrow gravel road. Here, we may have the opportunity to use our binoculars and watch from a close distance a flock of flamingos resting at the shallow waters of the lagoon. Riding through dunes we reach the famous Voidokilia Beach. An option here is to have a stop for swimming, snorkeling and sunbathing. After a refreshing swim we enjoy by the beach a delicious picnic of local delicacies before heading back to the town of Gialova.

Cycling Gialova

**A half day hike near Kalamata at the foothills of mount Taygetos.**

Land of stone and light, villages perched on the outskirts of mount Taygetos with tower houses and countless chapels. Just a breath from Kalamata, lies mount Kalathi rising up to 1316 meters. Visible from any side of the city, you can see it sometimes lost in the clouds. It is very rare for a mountain of such height to be sited so close to the sea and the city. On its slopes, picturesque villages smothered in green and even higher on its summit, forests of fir and pine trees with stunning views to the Messinian Bay and the city of Kalamata.

Our hike starts from the village of Ano Verga. We follow the trail ascending to the mountain’s highest peak. Along the way, we discover the ruins of a Greek settlement of the past century lost among olive trees, walnuts, mulberries and fir trees. The smell of the herbs, fragrant shrubs and wildflowers dominate our senses. Arriving at the highest peak at 1316 meters the view to the Messinian Bay and the city of Kalamata is breathtaking. We stop at an old threshing floor to rest and taste a homemade picnic of local delicacies and fresh fruits enjoying stunning views.

## ITINERARY

### An overview of the path

Our guide/driver will pick you up from your hotel (Rethymno district) at 9:00. You shall arrive to your destination after 25 min. Your journey starts near the imposing Monastery of Arkadi.

During your hike, you will open 11 fences. You will enter thus 11 different pastures, each one having its own story to tell. Follow the shepherd's paths, explore the Cretan nature off the beaten tracks and learn all the little secrets and traditions of the Cretan agriculture.

This hike has 3 different stages:

The first part of the hike is quite easy. You will have the sensation of leaving behind the view of the sea and going towards the mountains. The highest peak of Crete (Psiloritis 2456m) is often in sight. If you happen to do this walk at springtime, you will walk through green fields and countless flowers.

For sure, you will come across no one on your way. Perhaps, if you are lucky, you'll meet an authentic shepherd. Most of the time, sheep and goats run free in these lands. You will see some drinking troughs as well as some very beautiful trees.

During the second part, you may enjoy a small pique-nique prepared by your guide, you will eat what the sheperds eat as a snack. The view is magnificent... You can see the sea from above and feel the cool breeze. The second part ends up at a little church which is open to anyone most of the time.

The third part is a little bit more difficult. You will get out of the easy path to follow the E4 (European Path Network), sometimes even passing from unmarked fields. You will visit an abandonned church as well as a new one, which is build inside a rock. As you open the last fence... you will feel free and calm, full of beautiful images to bring back home.

After that, we return to the car, and we end our journey in a small kafeneio. Mme Irini is so welcoming and, although the scenery is a little bit strange and even... kitsch (as it is in most villages!) the food served there is homemade and suitable for all preferences (vegetarian friendly). The raki is great quality and the owner's love is more than enough to make you feel like home.

Note: There is no water source in the path, so bring some with you. Please, wear comfortable shoes suitable for trekking, a hat and sunscreen.

Eleven Gates: The Shepherd's Path

**A half day hike in Kardamyli of western Mani.**

Land of stone and light, villages perched on the outskirts of mount Taygetos with tower houses and countless chapels. Settlements bordering with the sea, steep canyons and caves and beaches entangled with olive groves. The charm of Mani is these contrasts. Here, every stone has its own history. Here, the magnificence of the mountainous nature is harmoniously combined with the allure of the sea as mount Taygetos is so close from the embrace of the Mediterranean.

Starting our hike from the fort of old Kardamyli we follow the trail of the ancient so called ‘’royal street’’ connecting Kardamyli with Sparta during ancient years. We walk on a pathway immersed in olive trees, pines and cypress trees. We visit some of the traditional villages of the region, we walk through their narrow streets and alleys learning about their history. Byzantine churches, stone-built watchtowers, old fountains, olive and grain mills reveal the life of locals in the past. A blast of colors and aromas from wildflowers and herbs overwhelm us and bring us even closer to the natural environment. Just a breath away, mount Taygetos with its imposing peaks. A small break for a healthy picnic with traditional local delicacies gives us additional energy.

## Description

Forget about the strenuous and tiring pedaling, trying to ride uphill or climb a steep road. Our e-bikes equip the rider with 5 levels of motorised assistance and 7 gears of mechanical advantage to give you absolute control on your ride and give you an extra boost over those steep slopes!

Explore the villages of Aegiali, visit Ag. Pavlos for a boat trip to Nikouria, discover the secret corners of Asfondilitis. Ride on paved and dirt roads. Admire the sunset from Potamos, Lagada or Tholaria and use the head and tail lights to ride back home safely at dusk!

Navarino bay near Pylos is a natural harbor where the island of Sphacteria stands as a natural barrier against the open Ionian Sea. An area integrated to the environmental program natura 2000 and the largest wetland in southern Greece offering shelter to endemic and migrating birds. Apart from its ecological significance, the area never ceases to amaze with its incredible beauty, attracting people from all over the world.

Our hike starts from Divari beach near Gialova. We follow the path around the lagoon where we get the opportunity to witness a unique and sensitive ecosystem. Here, migratory birds such as herons, flamingos and ospreys live which may have the opportunity to observe. We cross the dunes until we reach the famous omega shape beach of Voidokoilia. A refreshing swim into its turquoise waters is an option. On the way to Paleokastro fort we stop to explore the cave of mythical king Nestor. At the top of the hill we explore the medieval castle and learn about the intense history of the region. Here, the beauty and uniqueness of the landscape reveals breathtaking vistas hard to believe it's true. After tasting a healthy picnic, we descend the way back.

Hiking around Navarino Bay

## Description
 
**Palia Strata**, as the name itself says (old walk in Greek), follows ancient route once used for communication and trading purposes. Most of its length coincides with the ancient road which connected Minoa with Aegiali.

Walk through this ancient path setting off from Aegiali bay and ending to the renowned Monastery of Panagia Hozoviotissa. Join us in a hike, led by our expert guides through some important cultural and historical attractions while walking up to the cliffs and gazing the breath-taking view over the sea on the way!

The “old road” of Amorgos is the most popular long-distance route to savour and is passing through the crest of a mountain at an altitude of 350-400 meters, on a coastal path.
 
We are departing from **Potamos**, a village above Aegiali port. Step back in time: **Asfondilitis** is an abandoned rural settlement with houses of dry-stone walls. Followingly, explore **Kapsala** place, the area where monks used to live in natural caves.

Let yourself admire the unrivalled sea view of the ‘Big Blue’ and finally enter into the iconic **Monastery of Panagia (Virgin Mary) Hozoviotissa** – the second oldest monastery in Greece. After this visit, enjoy a stroll around in the beautiful village of Chora.

Hiking - Palia Strata Route

Hiking into the Centaurs Gorge, a spectacular, unique trail, of moderate difficulty through a narrow passage, with high green walls, of native small plants, nourished by moisture. Foloi Forrest is a protected area from the NATURA 2000 Network. It is located at an altitude of 688 m. on Mount Foloi in Ilia and occupies an area of 33,000 acres. It is the only native broad-leaved oak forest in the Balkans, with old clusters of oaks. According to mythology, Erymanthios Kapros came down to it for food. The beast terrorized and destroyed the crops of the villagers, while with his tusks he tore any animal he found in front of him, annoying even the Centaurs, who could not face it.
With a trick, Hercules managed to lead the animal to the Gorge of Foloi, which had been blocked with a net, to catch it alive and take it to Argos.
In the forest after the end of the hike we do ARCHERY and YOGA VINYASA.

The highest mountain in Greece and the residence of the twelve gods of mythology, invites you to a divine mountaineering experience. Here you will come with a unique mission: to sit on the “throne of Zeus”, having all of Greece at your feet !! and to conquer the peak.

Olympos, extending to the prefectures of Pieria and Larissa, southwest of Macedonia, proudly stands up like a giant tower of 2918 meters without anybody questioning its sovereignty. Because of this fact, the Ancient Greeks had “placed” their gods on him.

**Mytikas: at the top of Greece**

Meeting and welcome in Leptokarya, information about the activity and preparation. After a while we start with the company car crossing beautiful forest roads to the Christakis shelter at 2,400m.

From there the hike begins, we cross beautiful alpine slopes towards the peaks of Olympus, aiming to climb the highest peak in Greece, Mytikas. The whole route gives us unique images and a magnificent landscape unfolds in front of us with every step.

The route we follow is Christakis shelter – Skala peak – Kakoskala – Mytikas – Christakis shelter.

Climb to Olympus summit

**An easy hike combined with archery into one of the secret gems of the Peloponnese**

The gorge of Polylimnio waterfalls is a paradise on earth and one of the hidden gems of the Peloponnese. Polylimnio means many lakes and this is exactly what you discover. There are numerous fresh water lakes in many levels with aqua blue waters created by spectacular waterfalls. Water flows from one lake to another and the hiker can cross the gorge through a clear path, small bridges, as well as metal aiding handles.

We meet at the village of Haravgi where our hike starts towards the gorge. We walk into a magical but real natural paradise passing along lakes and spectacular waterfalls. Our hike will take up to two hours and it is suitable for kids as there is no significant altitude difference. Swimming into the lakes would be an option. A swim into the lake and under the waterfall will be extremely refreshing and the perfect reward. At the end of the hike we can enjoy a healthy picnic with traditional local delicacies and relax by the lake. Here your guide and archery instructor will assemble your bow and will set up the place for shooting. Your guide will advise you step by step on how to use your bow and arrows with precision and safety. At the end, we will celebrate your scores.

Discover the spectacular beauty and the day-to-day lives of islanders in the picturesque villages of Aegiali bay – Tholaria, Lagkada and Ormos. A hike through nature, culture and tradition with an experienced local guide that will lead the way in the ancient path of Amorgos. 

Upon departing from Vigla Hotel which is the starting point, we’ll be heading towards village Lagada (or Langada) which is right opposite to ours, Tholaria. Breath in refreshing salty air and enjoy a moderate hike. It is the perfect option for immersing yourself in the sublime landscape of Aegiali bay. Don’t forget to keep your eyes peeled for charming baby goats or cute donkeys along your way.

You can either take the route to Stroumbos village or the other one to the famous** Panagia Epanochoriani** church (dedicated to Virgin Mary) that many believers visit during the great festival that takes place on August 15. Next stop is a traditional cafe where a cup of coffee or a fresh traditional sweet will be more than appreciated.

Last but not least, the visit to the remarkable small church (used to be a fortress, the church was built afterwards) of **Agia Triada** (the Holy Trinity) is a must-to-see attraction that was built to protect the people from raids.

Walking down towards the bay, you will follow one of the most ancient and well-preserved paths on the island. What is better than ending your hiking with swimming in **Aegiali**.

## ITINERARY

### Reaching the top

Conquer Psiloritis, the highest summit of Crete, at 2456 meters! According to greek mythology, the Olympian god Zeus was raised on these slopes. The Psiloritis mountain range is listed as both a Unesco Global and a Unesco European Geopark because of its unique flora and geological features. Hike through a variety of landscapes on your way to the top in only three hours and be rewarded with a spectacular view over Crete!

We will enter the Psiloritis National Park, which is at the same time also a Unesco Global Geopark, and will ascend through a unique scenery which was formed millions of years ago when the tectonic plate of Africa started pushing itself under the European plate and this forced the southern edge of the European continent out of the sea. Gradually the flora will become more scarce on our drive to the Refuge "Lakkos tou Mygerou" at 1600 meters. We follow the Strata of Psiloritis which hundreds of people follow during a special event at the end of August every year. 

The first part will feature a rather steep climb, but the morning freshness, regular breaks and, if needed, slow pace will make everyone feel comfortable. After about two hours we will join the path coming from the Nida Plateau and we will be just underneath the Agathias Peak, with 2424 meters, the third highest summit on Crete. From here we take turn to the right and start an easy walk of one more hour to reach the top of Psiloritis, the highest point of Crete (2456 meters), also called Timios Stavros. From here we will enjoy a splendid view over all mountain ranges, the Aegean sea and on clear days even Santorini on the north side and the Libyan sea and Gavdos island on the south side. After our picnic at the chapel on the top we will return to our starting point and drive to a traditional taverna... we need to refill our batteries after all. This trip takes you back to your accomodation quite early so you'll have time to relax after and enjoy this great experience in your minds and hearts.

Ηike Mount Ida - Psiloritis from Rethymno

If it’s wild and wonderful you want, then this route has it in abundance. Starting from the beautiful village of Lagada and ending to the small church of Stavros, hidden high up in the ridges nearby Krikelos (or Kroukelos) mountain. It is full of natural beauty, upon walking along the impressive cliffs, enjoy the exceptional sea view. We are going to pass by the monastery of **Agios Ioannis Theologos**, and walk across the ‘invisible’ part of the island. This is the path that the shepherds once used to take for reaching their fields up in the mountains.

We begin early in the morning in order to avoid the heat of the sun. **Lagada** is our starting point, the village opposite to ours, Tholaria, at an altitude of 225m. Admire the unique Cycladic architecture and byzantine churches in one of the oldest villages of the island.

Path No 5 passes above the small settlement of **Stroumbos** – ‘the village with 12 houses and 13 stone ovens’, with no electricity and running water. The trail is strewn with prickly pears, cactuses and ficus. After an ascent of 30’, Agios Ioannis Theologos monastery appears in front of you at an altitude of 515m. It used to be metochi (having a status of dependency) of the Hozoviotissa Monastery. It has been recently renovated and there are distinctive characteristics of byzantine architecture. Inside the apse there is a mosaic cross, an indication that it was probably built during the iconoclasm period. Listen to the silence of this place, it has so much to say.

Passing through steep and uneven terrain, explore rocky cliffs and scenic highlights that you won’t soon forget before reaching **Stavros** church. Here, the out-of-this-world view will definitely take your breath away.

## ITINERARY

### Description of our trail

The path in the gorge begins just below the village of Imbros and the path to the entrance to the gorge is clearly marked. Inside, the trail descends gently down the gorge towards the south. It is never steep and not particularly difficult, but like everywhere in Crete, the path is stony, so we have to be careful where we put your feet.

As we continue inside the gorge, we can notice that it is small in height as well as in length, so we are always right next to the slopes and cliffs and we have a much better opportunity to observe the unique plants and flowers nearby. Thankfully, since the gorge is quite narrow and there are a lot of trees, we will be accompanied by shade most of the time!

The flora of the gorge is rich and it is surprising that between so many rocks where there is no soil, various trees grow; in particular lianas, rare herbs and all kinds of herbs, with the exception of cypresses, azylakous, wild fig, agriomygdalias, olive trees, wicker and shrub with aromatic sage.

The rarest Cretan plants grow in ravines or on steep mountain slopes, such as Ebenus cretica, Linum arboreum (flax), Campanula pelviformis (bellflower), Staechelina arborea and Petromarcula arboreum. The flourishing plants we will probably observe in the plains and high peaks are the Tulipa bakeri and the saxalite Tulipa (tulips), tge Anchusa caespitosa (alcanet), the Scabiosa alborincta and theScabiosa minoana (scabiosa). The fauna is presented in a semi-wild form, with various species of birds like partridge, Kotsifi, thrushes, hawks, crows, eagles and other rare species of wild birds.

After about 90 minutes of walking from the entrance to the gorge, we will pass an impressive stone arch on the right; this marks almost the end of the hike and, if we’re feeling exhausted, we can stop here and return to our starting point to have lunch. If we continue after that, we’ll observe that the gorge widens a bit and after about 15 minutes we will arrive back on the road and at the village of Komitades, where we will find many taverns with traditional Cretan flavors, in order to enjoy lunch and relaxation after this beautiful hike.

Finally, after lunch, we will be driven by a local back to our transfer vehicle in the entrance of the gorge, in order to start our visit to Chora Sfakion.

Chora Sfakíon or simply Sfakia is a town on the south coast of Chania in West Crete. It is the capital of the remote and mountainous region of Sfakia, and is a small town of almost 300 inhabitants. It lies on the south coast near the exit of the imposing Imbros Gorge, 74 km south of Chania. It has two small harbours.

There is a quiet local beach, called Vrissi, just west of the village, and several pebbly beaches nearby.

We will discover an exceptional part of the south coast of the island, by going around the Plakias peninsula while overlooking to the Libyan Sea. Even in August we will be away from the crowds... and hike this beautiful part of the island pretty much alone.

## ITINERARY

### The two-gorge walk

Our guide/driver will pick you up from your hotel at 8:30. After a 40min drive towards the hinterland, we will arrive in the remote village of Moundros where our walk starts.

This walk aims at making you discover this part of the island, off the beaten tracks, where nature often seems untouched and human presence is mostly embodied by... animals and agricultural activities! Beehives, pastures, vines...

The hike can be divided in three parts:

The first part can be the most demanding as to reach the start of the first gorge, we have some good uphills ahead! On the way, we will go through an old abandonned village, built some 400 years ago but quite well-preserved; a unique opportunity to imagine what life could be like in this area in the past as we wander from the olive oil mill to old stoned-houses.

The second part is easier as we enter the first of the two gorges; lush nature, boulders and water running most of the year (except for the hot months of summer but the shade provided inside eases the walk during those months). From one bank to the other and sometimes in the river bed, the walk reveals all its secrets; amazing rock formations, birds, goats among others. Anytime is good for a little break in the shade and you can rely on your guide to provide you with some bread & cheese, olives and even a nice coffee in the middle of nowhere!

The third part is also easy; we even go back on the asphalt (civilization?!) for a little while to reach the second gorge. This one leads back to the village of Moundros and is more open than the first one; it will give you the chance to walk in more open spaces and enjoy views of the high walls of the gorge, sometimes overhung by vultures...but as this hike is for fit people, we shall have no fear of passing them!

Back to the car, we will head to another nearby village for a nice late lunch in a traditional family taverna for a heartwarming food reward.

Note: Don't forget your walking shoes, sunscreen and at least 2lt of water per person! Children from 15 years old are welcome (younger children are welcome as well, but this needs to be discussed with guests).

Arriving in the entrance of Kourtaliotiko gorge, we are immediately amazed by the majestic walls that stand hundreds of meters high. We take the stone steps that lead us to the source of the river that formed this scenery through the ages. There, we can visit the little church of S. Nicolas Kourtaliotis, the local saint that lived here as a hermit, and learn about the old myths of the gorge. We take some time to put on our neoprene suits and our personal gear, distributed by the team leaders. Then, the instructors will give a safety briefing so that we can understand the use of our gear and learn to trust it. Now we are ready to get the fun started!

### Canyoning games in the river

The source of Kourtaliotiko river becomes a natural playground for us! Feel free to rappel down the steep canyon wall next to the waterfall and try adrenaline jumps in the water as many times as you wish. We swim around, we take pictures and we play like kids! Our specialized instructors and guides will be next to you at all times to ensure your safety and guide you through the different activities.

### Short river trek

Our adventure continues further down the river. Hiking towards the south, we soon discover a small cave called “the fairy cave” – if you are lucky enough, you may see one	 hiding behind the stalactites and stalagmites! We will hike for about half an hour more to find the best spot for our next stop.

## DESCRIPTION:

We start from the main square of Vitina and from a marked path we descend to meet an old stone bridge named “Zarzi” and stop to admire the river “Mylaontas”

Then we follow the side of the river between plane and fir trees on an amazing combination of colors and sights. Next stop at the watermill named “Tselepis”. We can take an idea how people made flour in the past. After a small limb, we find walnut trees on a Plato with a picturesque Mainalon mountain view. Then we meet a beautiful stream named “Mparmpas” and from a marked path we can see a breathtaking view of Agia Paraskevi church. Our tour finishes at the main square from a dirt road and our last view of Vitina.
