About Mycenae
Mycenae
The place where Homer was inspired to write the great poems, Iliad and Odyssey, can only be breathtaking. On a bare hill, on the peninsula of Peloponnese, lies the relics of Mycenae, once the home of legendary Agamemnon, which served as the most powerful kingdom for four centuries. Enlisted as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999, it is indeed one of the most important archaeological discoveries in Greece. Heinrich Schliemann, often characterized as the father of Mycenaean archaeology, was the archaeologist who discovered and excavated this sacred site for the first time in 1876. Mycenae was the richest palatial center in Greece during the Late Bronze Age, which gave its name to the glorious Mycenaean civilization that conquered the eastern Mediterranean from the 15th up to the 12th century BC. Wandering around the once majestic fortress of Mycenae, you will uncover the Lion’s Gate, a massive construction with two large lions that served as an emblem of the Mycenaean kings. Surrounded by Cyclopean walls, the imperious palace dominates the highest spot of the citadel - among the most impressive erections include Grave Circle A and B, containing monumental graves and the place where the golden death mask of Agamemnon was discovered, as well as the Treasury of Atreus, else known as the Tomb of Agamemnon, the greatest example of vaulted Mycenaean tholos tombs. It is definite that a tour of the cradle of Mycenaean civilization will remain forever in your memory.
